Bear Traps are important objects in the Hello Neighbor series.

Description

Hello Neighbor

Bear traps are mostly utilized by Mr. Peterson in Hello Neighbor, but can also be used by Nicky Roth.

If Nicky Roth repeatedly goes to the same place, Mr. Peterson will soon become aware about it, and will place a bear trap in that area.

The bear trap functions as a slowing down mechanism. If Nicky Roth steps on a bear trap, it will slam, thereby trapping him. The sound of a closed bear trap will alert Mr. Peterson if he is nearby. To get out of the trap, you need to press the space bar repeatedly.

Bear traps can be very useful to Nicky Roth. If one is placed by Nicky, Mr. Peterson may walk or run into it, trapping him for a brief amount of time.

Secret Neighbor

In Secret Neighbor, the bear trap is an object that can only be utilized by the Scary Neighbor. Unlike Hello Neighbor, a child player cannot get out of a bear trap if caught in one.

All bear traps in Secret Neighbor look the same as the ones in Hello Neighbor.

Hello Neighbor 2

In Hello Neighbor 2, the bear trap is a dangerous obstacle utilized by Mr. Peterson and The Taxidermist. Mr. Peterson also uses bear traps in the boss battle.

History

Hello Neighbor

In Pre-Alpha, bear traps would appear in places the player would frequently go to, and Mr. Peterson would throw bear traps at the player when pursuing them.

In Alpha 2, Mr. Peterson no longer throws bear traps at the player, and was given an animation for placing down bear traps.

Starting with Alpha 3, a tooltip has appeared that tells the player that you can escape a bear trap by repeatedly pressing the space bar.

In the full game, since the Sharkotron has a cartoonish art style, its jaw (bear trap) also became cartoonish and looks like a bear trap with uneven teeth and a simpler texture.

Secret Neighbor

In Secret Neighbor, starting with the Christmas Alpha, the bear trap is an object that can only be utilized by a player playing as the Scary Neighbor.

Location

Pre-Alpha

  • An open bear trap can be found in the closet room.
  • After the nightmare with the Giant Neighbor, bear traps of different sizes will hang in the garage on the wall.
  • Bear traps can be obtained from Mr. Peterson - bear traps put on the floor; while chasing the player.

Alpha 1

  • One bear trap is in the garage.
  • Several neutralized bear traps can be found in the closet room on the second floor.

Alpha 2

The player can find bear traps when Mr. Peterson sets them in places the player would frequently go to.

Alpha 3

  • A bear trap can be found in Fear Darkness.
  • The player can still find bear traps thanks to Mr. Peterson, when he sets them in places the player would frequently go to.

Alpha 4 - Full Game

  • Same as Alpha 3.

Secret Neighbor

  • Bear traps can be found where the Scary Neighbor player sets them.

Bugs

  • There is a bug in Alpha 1: if Mr. Peterson goes into a bear trap, he will not stop moving, while the animation of his attempt to get out of the bear trap is lost.
  • In Alpha 2, you can pick up an open bear trap, but it will immediately slam and hold the player back. To take an open trap, you need to do this when Mr. Peterson puts it in real-time. To do this, the player needs to be unnoticed.
  • In Alpha 2, if Mr. Peterson catches the player and steps on the trap at the same time, then he will remain on the trap after the player appears, and will not appear on his spawn.
  • In Alpha 4 - Beta 2, objects in the player’s hand trigger the bear trap, while the object changes its location relative to the player’s model (that is, it can appear on the head, in the leg, between the legs, etc.). In addition, if you place a bear trap close to any object and open it, regardless of the size of the object, it will teleport close to the side.
  • In the full game with a small chance, you can take the "trap" from the open trap, but the game will crash. Although if you try, you can pull two identical objects from the trap at once, among which one will be fake.
  • In the Secret Neighbor Christmas Alpha, you could put a bunch of bear traps in one place.
  • Sometimes, if the Neighbor is chasing you, he will not get trapped in the trap if you set one. The trap will close and he will keep running.
  • In Alpha 3, if you bear trap and pick it up, Mr. Peterson will come and fix the bear trap. You're going to have an open bear trap.

Trivia

  • In early versions of Hello Neighbor (Pre-Alpha and Alpha 1), Mr. Peterson threw bear traps at the protagonist, thereby delaying them. To delay the player in newer versions, Mr. Peterson throws jars of glue (glue has been used since Alpha 3) or tomatoes (tomatoes have been used since the full game).
  • The bear trap is one of the few objects that has not had its texture and model changed throughout all versions of Hello Neighbor.
  • The full game has one cartoonish bear trap, the jaw of the Sharkatron.
  • In Pre-Alpha, a few bear traps can be found on the wall in the garage. This is the only time you can find bear traps of different sizes.
  • A bear trap can be found in Fear Darkness.
  • In Secret Neighbor, you can break a bear trap.
  • Mr. Peterson will not trigger bear traps he walks over if he is not chasing you.
  • Mr. Peterson cannot get stuck in bear traps he has placed down if he is chasing you.
  • You can open closed bear traps to trap Mr. Peterson, however, you can get caught in them too if not careful.
  • There is an animation for Mr. Peterson placing bear traps.
  • Mr. Peterson will only place bear traps if friendly mode of off.
  • Mr. Peterson will also not place traps in Act 1. This does not apply to the basement, which he will place.
