There is not much known about the Scrapped Storylines of Hello Neighbor, but there are some details that can be taken in from the game's developmental versions, unused content and concepts/teasers.

Prototype - Alpha 1: The Coma

The Prototype - Alpha 1 storyline

The player's car gets hit by a utility pole, sending him into a coma. He is taken to the Neighbor's house, and realizes that his Neighbor is hiding something in his basement. We can get an idea that the Neighbor used to have a family, as seen in Alpha 1 with the children room. The game ends with the player being buried alive, ending his life. There are clues that point out that the Neighbor may have had an affiliation with the devil. He has 666 stickers on the bottom of his shoes, a fallen angel sign can be seen on the street near his house, and he owns multiple copies of 'Faust', which is a book about a man who sold his soul to the devil for infinite riches and pleasure. To become associated with the devil, the Neighbor would have most likely committed apostasy, which is supported by the fact that he owns mugs with the head of the golden calf printed onto them. We can presume that the Neighbor worked in a carnival and was involved in a car accident, as both of these probabilities are presented in Alpha 1.

Alpha 1.5/Alpha 2

The player moves into a new house and falls asleep on the couch. He wakes up to the sound of screaming and realizes that his house has been taken over by the Neighbor. The screaming is coming from a person who has been kidnapped by the Neighbor. The player witnesses the Neighbor struggle with the hostage until he eventually locks them in the basement. The player subsequently enters the Neighbor's house and breaks into the basement. Upon entering the basement, carnival like music starts playing, implying yet again that the Neighbor may have worked at a carnival. A group of people (possibly a family) are heard crying as the player reaches the end of the staircase. The first room contains ritualistic candles surrounding a baby crib and mattress. Later on, the player hides under a bed and is almost found by the Neighbor when he hears a little girl scream. He walks towards the door after the Neighbor and goes through it. Distant screams are heard, which might indicate the basement is much larger. The Neighbor's assosiation with the devil is still supported as multiple copies of Faust and golden calf mugs can still be found around his house, and the heavy use of ritualistic imagery in the basement. The evidence of people locked in the labyrinth like basement may suggest a pact between the Neighbor and the devil, much like the story of Faust.

Alpha 3

Alpha 3 may have the most confusing storyline. The only story we get is from the ending, but it's still not much. The Neighbor is crying in the living room and his car is outside. There are boxes, implying he may have just moved in, and on the other side of a door is the Thing, the representation of fear. The Thing may be what's causing the Neighbor to cry.

Alpha 4 - Beta 3 (Like Father Like Son)

The framed picture of the Neighbor and younger player

The player wakes up in his city apartment to knocking, and realizes he's getting evicted. Using evidence from the game and scrapped trailers, the player already seems to fear the Neighbor. There is a cutscene in the Beta 3 modkit where he jumps out of the apartment window attempting to escape whoever is knocking on the door, just to be grabbed by the Neighbor seconds later. He also has a framed picture of two people on the Neighbor's porch in his apartment. The player moves back into his childhood home and begins hallucinating. It is now after dark, and the player awakens to screaming coming from the very house he was just moving into, which has become greatly enlarged. Looking into the darkened house, the player sees the Neighbor "kidnap" someone, eventually locking them in the basement, and fortify the door. This scene suggests that player may have been abused as a child, inflicted by his father who is the Neighbor. The fear levels represented the player's lasting memories of abuse, and the Giant Neighbor boss battle most likely symbolized (before the full game) the player overcoming the fear of his father's abuse, and resolving family issues. The scrapped Beta 3 ending (or early full game ending) shows the player successfully beating his fear and appearing in what he imagined was the basement of the Neighbor's house, which is just in fact a small closet in the player's childhood home. He walks out the house and towards the church, most likely visiting his father's grave.

Trivia

  • The achievement for completing the full game on Xbox is called "Like Father Like Son". On all other ports of Hello Neighbor, the achievement is called "No More Fears".
