Finch, better known as The Scout, is one of the protagonists/kid classes in Secret Neighbor and HNVR.

Appearance

Scout, or Finch, has black hair which is tied up into two ponytails on the sides of her head, with the ponytails themselves being in a yellow hair tie. She has a long bang which covers her forehead and nearly her eyes. She is dressed in a Girl Scouts' uniform: wearing a light-green T-Shirt that has numerous badges on it, and a large, loose orange tie around her neck. She also wears light-brown shorts that contains a small green pouch around her waist that is attached to her belt, and a yellowish-green watch on her wrist. For her footwear, she wears knee-length socks with dark green slip-on shoes. She also wields a slingshot and seen in various poses with it.

Her appearance can be changed via the shop. You can change her head piece, torso piece, leggings piece and her accessories piece via different costumes or cosmetics. These will often times give her a hat, a new shirt or a long-sleeved shirt instead of her normal one that can come with new badges, pants or different shorts with a different belt, or can give her a new pouch or watch, or can completely give her new accessories all-together. These items will cost either a certain amount of Coins, or Arcade Coupons.

Abilities

Slingshot

Upon pressing Q, or the Left Bumper if you're playing on controller, Scout will bring up her slingshot. When the slingshot is equipped, she can fire walnuts at fellow kids or the neighbor. The Scout can aim her slingshot by holding Left-Click, or the Left Trigger button for controller, allowing for better accuracy. If the Scout aims her slingshot for more than 0.6 seconds, or half a second, she will charge up what is called a "Power Shot", or charged shot. When the camera fully zooms in and stops, her slingshot has been fully charged. If Scout decides to fire her slingshot, the walnut will do significantly more damage than if it was just shot normally. (25 damage for a "Power Shot" or fully charged shot, and 5 damage for a default shot. A 20 damage difference between the two shot types.)

You can also cancel your slingshot if you're aiming it by pressing Right Click, or the Right Bumper on controller. It takes several charged walnuts to knock down a kid, but will it take more charged shots to kill the neighbor. However, it might take even more or less walnuts to kill depending on the Neighbor class.

Evasive Maneuvers (Passive)

After hitting the Neighbor three times with her slingshot, whether it is from "Power Shots" or from default shots, Scout will temporarily gain a 15% speed increase for the next 5 seconds. Progress resets for this ability each time it is successfully triggered. However, progress will also reset if the Scout fails to hit the neighbor again with her slingshot during a 2 second window. All progress counted toward this ability is fully reset if the time-window is missed.

Trivia

  • If you're out of nuts, you can find bags to restock. Hovering over the bag with your mouse gives you the option to "Replenish Nuts". This means that you can reload your slingshot. However, the interaction might be short or long depending on how much ammo is left in your slingshot. The location of Walnut Bags might vary depending on the map.
    • In the Easter Alpha for Secret Neighbor, you had to collect the nuts in order to use your slingshot. This was later removed when the full game released, and no longer requires you to search for walnuts in order to fire your slingshot.
    • In Map 1, walnut bag locations are: the Shed, Garage, 2nd Floor Hallway, 3rd Floor Kitchen, 3rd Floor Backroom that has two holes, and the Greenhouse.
    • in Map 2, walnut bag locations are: the 1st Floor Kitchen, Garage, 2nd Floor Hallway to the Bedrooms, Prison Room, Brick Storage room, and the Roof Shed.
    • in Map 3, walnut bag locations are: the Shed, 1st Floor Boiler Room, Next to the red car on the 1 Floor, 3rd floor entrance next to the Vent, 2nd Floor Garage, 3rd Floor projector room.
    • in Map 4, walnut bag locations are: the Greenhouse, Kitchen, Shed and Boiler Room in the basement.
  • If you check the Scout's description in-game, near the end of the sentence it says "his slingshot". This is most likely a spelling mistake from the developers as there are a lot of them in-game.
    • This was later fixed in the Summer Update for 2021, where the text was changed to "her slingshot". This confirmed that this was just a typo.
  • In the Beta for Secret Neighbor, she actually had both of her front teeth showing. In the current build, they are not present.
    • This was removed due to it being a racial stereotype for Asians being shown, or portrayed, as having two front teeth in media.
  • She has an exclusive costume that references Zorro, a fictional hero who's adventures played out in California.
  • If a walnut hits an object or a player, it'll crack open and lay on the ground for a short time.
    • Although this is a bug, if Scout fires her slingshot at a object that has collision and is close to it, she can end up hitting and damaging herself in most cases. However, this does not happen all the time, and is quite rare.
  • The slingshot used to be plain brown, but now one part is hot pink.
  • Her slingshot was nerfed in the new spring update.
  • Scout's Slingshot ability has been changed multiple times during the game's various content updates.
    • First, in the Summer Update for 2020, Scout's ability was buffed, although indirect, with her "Evasive Maneuvers" ability receiving a buff from 2 seconds, to 3 seconds.
    • Then, her ability was further changed in the Halloween update for 2020, with her slingshot receiving a rework. Scout would now have to hold her slingshot for 0.6 seconds in order to perform a "Power Shot". The Power Shot does more damage than the default shot, with a Power Shot doing 25 damage instead of the default 5 damage. However, a small cooldown, (0.25 seconds), was added to prevent Scout from spamming her slingshot.
    • In the Spring update for 2021, Scout's slingshot was changed once again, however it was not recorded in the official patch notes. The change made it so "Power Shots" now counted towards the progress for Evasive Maneuvers. Before, only default shots counted.
    • Lastly, with the recent Summer Update for 2023, Scout's slingshot ability was updated once more. Scout's slingshot can now destroy beartraps and can disarm Smoke Traps if she directly fires a walnut at them.
  • Finch appears in the animated series, Hello Neighbor: Welcome To Raven Brooks, currently only appearing in S01E01, "New Neighbors".
    • Her name was confirmed in the IMDb casting list for the animated series.
      • Finch was not present in the pilot episode of the animated series, or S01E02.
  • Finch is a gender neutral name.
  • According to the official IMDb casting list for Secret Neighbor, Scout's voice actor is Bonnie Bogovich.
